Old Quarry

‘Alemese and Bagheira’, 9a and 9b Old Quarry, Dalkey Co. Dublin.

Old Quarry is a quiet cut de sac a short walk from the historic Dalkey village and as the name suggests was a part of the Dalkey quarry which started mining in around 1815 in order to supply granite for the construction of the new harbour pier at nearby Dún Laoghaire, as well as for the construction of the South Bull Wall (part of the outer defences of Dublin Harbour) and as flagstone for Dublin streets.

The quarry was connected to Dún Laoghaire by a light railway, part of whose alignment was later used to build the Dalkey Atmospheric Railway. The remaining part of the route is now a public footpath known as ‘The Metals’ and runs up through ‘Old Quarry’ joining two sections of the historic walk.

In September 2016 permission was granted for the construction of two new detached houses on the site of the existing bungalow at 9 Old Quarry.

The design was for two gable fronted contemporary dormer bungalows which would be sympathetic to the rhythm of the street but contemporary and of their time in terms of materials and detailing. The layouts provided for modern family ‘A rated’ detached homes with four bedrooms and 2,250ft2 of balanced accommodation.

The houses are heated by air to water heat pumps with underfloor heating and full house heat recovery ventilation.

Construction started in late 2016 and the houses were completed by the third quarter of 2017. Both houses were marketed and sold prior to completion in 2017.
